What an automotive battery does
The main purpose of your car battery is to start your engine. When you turn the key, the battery provides the high-powered burst of electricity needed to engage the starter motor and fire up the engine. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over to power the electrical systems (like your headlights and radio) and recharge the battery. However, the battery also acts as a stabilizer, helping to smooth out voltage spikes and provide extra power when the alternator can't keep up with demand.
Getting the right one
The right battery depends on your vehicle type, engine size and any extra accessories you've added.
Using a battery with lower Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) than required can leave you stranded on a cold morning.
Modern stop-start vehicles require specific EFB or AGM batteries to handle higher electrical loads.
