Three types, three jobs
Cranking
high CCA, thin plates, a quick burst of current to fire up the outboard or inboard. Not built to be run flat.
Deep cycle
high amp-hours, thick plates. Runs the electric motor, sounder, livewell, nav lights and stereo through the day.
Dual-purpose
one battery that does both, but it's a genuine compromise: moderate CCA and moderate cycling, excelling at neither. Fine for a smaller single-battery boat; work an electric motor hard all day and a dedicated cranking plus a dedicated deep cycle is better.
Built for the environment
Marine batteries are built to cope with constant vibration and a wet, corrosive environment. A standard automotive battery in a boat will not last.
